In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms on the right-hand side of a house ("The Yellow House") on the Place Lamartine in Arles. His living quarters were the ones with the green shutters. His bedroom lay beyond.
Here, Van Gogh has depicted his bedroom in the Yellow House, furnished with simple pine furniture and his own paintings. Over the bed hang his portraits of the poet Eugene Boch and the soldier Paul-Eugene Milliet.
