The 25 Union Pacific "Big Boys" were built between 1941 and 1944. The largest locomotives ever built, they were designed to pull large tonnage over the continuous grade up Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie Wyoming. Most were retired in 1961. As late as 1962 there were still four operational Big Boys at Green River, WY.
